Lansing, MI – All Democratic Michigan members of Congress voted for Equal Wages for Women as the Paycheck Fairness Act, H.R. 1338, passed the House of Representatives on July 31, 2008. Bob Alexander, 8th District Democratic Congressional nominee, strongly affirmed “I would have co-sponsored and voted for this crucial bill. Competent women hold the positions of Director, Media Director and Treasurer in my campaign. It is outrageous that equal pay is still an issue in 2008. We must change this tragic inequity as soon as possible.”

Lansing, MI – Democratic Congressional candidate Bob Alexander met with Sen. Barack Obama at a private reception just before Obama’s New Energy for America speech at the Lansing Center earlier today. Alexander joined Governor Jennifer Granholm, Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow and other elected officials in welcoming Obama to Lansing.
Alexander was thrilled to meet Sen. Obama, and was pleased with the similarities in their ideas for energy independence and Michigan’s economic recovery.
Obama’s speech focused on the need to develop multiple types of renewable energy, calling for a $150 billion investment in clean energy over the next ten years. He also outlined his support for the auto industry, including $4 billion in loans and tax credits for investments in plug-in hybrid car technologies, leveraging private capital to help bring the vehicles to market, and $7,000 tax credits for consumers who purchase these new fuel-efficient cars. His goal is to have one million 150-mpg hybrids on the road by 2014. Read More

Governor Jennifer Granholm applauded the passage of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 (HERA), saying that it would benefit Michigan’s families and neighborhoods. The Governor said that Michigan’s share of the neighborhood stabilization grants could total as much as $168 million. These grants would be used to rehabilitate up to 6,000 properties and generate 3,400 jobs.
The Pew Center recently released a study showing that over 91,000 Michigan homeowners were in foreclosure at the end of 2007. The foreclosure problem affects neighborhoods as well: over 1.4 million Michiganders living near a foreclosed home will see their property values decline in the next year.
The bill easily passed the House and Senate; President Bush dropped his earlier veto threat and signed it into law this week. Read More
